It Was A Fearful Experience

Katherine often wondered why she was so afraid of lightning. Sure, it could lead to death and if not death, it could bring about great harm. But she hasn’t experienced it in such a way, so how does one develop such an intense fear from something with little to no experience she wondered.

She was walking around the neighborhood when she stumbled upon this weird curve in the earth. “It wasn’t here before”, she thought to herself.

Beyond that curve, she could spot a bit of a divide in the seam inside the earth. She started to walk down hill where this weird offshoot of the land led. She stood before a platform with a door. She knocked on the door, a man in a lab coat answered it.

“Are you here for the experiment?”, he asked.

“Yeeeeeeees????!”, she replied. Figuring that even if she was not entirely truthful, what could go wrong by following this odd path that appeared before her.

They went down a twisting hallway and then an elevator that seem to feel like a rollercoaster, a few flights of stairs a tube that dropped them down into what looked like a lab.

“Lay down on the bed and I’ll hook you up to the wires so we can send you to the other side to see where you’ve been before.”, the scientist instructed.

She laid down on the bed and started breathing deeply, she didn’t know what to expect. She woke up today thinking it was just going to be a regular day with a regular walk like she usually does. She closes her eyes as he begins to hook her up to the machines. They’re quiet except for the lightning sound coming from the top.

She opens her eyes, it’s rainy and she’s laying in the middle of the street soaked in a heavy gown. “Where am I?”, she thought. She wanted to scream, but she was afraid to alarm anyone around. She didn’t know where she was or if anyone was around. She stood up to raise her head and a flash hit, she was forced back to lab where she woke up.

“What happened, what was all that about?”, she questioned.

“You are now part of an experiment I started a few years back. A running theory of mine, we fear our greatest fears directly because of the way we died in our past life. I built this machine to try to prove my theory. I needed a place where so many dead lay and that’s why I live in the middle of the cemetery, their energy helps bring the experiment to life”, he explained.

“Oh wow, well I was only there for a short while. How could you even tell from that small of an experience”, she asked.

“well, it’s not what you experience there that I am interested in, it’s what you experience after that I am documenting for this experiment. I may try to send you back a few more times, but we need to see if the first time worked. Close your eyes and let your mind wander and tell me what you see while it’s doing it.”, he instructed.

“It’s starting out blank and now a bunch of random scenes I don’t entirely recognize, and now it has stopped on this house I’ve never seen. I’m wearing a long dark blue dress and playing piano while what sounds like a Grandfather clock is going off in the background.”, She walked him through her mind as she came across each detail.

“Now as you go about your days you’ll notice memories appear like this one that you won’t recognize, but soon they will fall together like a story you never knew you knew. And by the way, a small detail, this machine chose you. I don’t choose the people who are meant for this experiment. So far people say they see the “Curve” and then that’s what they follow here. So right now, you’re one of the chosen.”, he said

“I don’t know whether to feel lucky or cursed”, she joked.
